MRN Brief: October Webinar Recap, Upcoming Events & more

Published on 10/23/2024

Inside the NewsHere's our top news for today...

The 2nd webinar of our fall series on October 17 featured Tom Patzkowski, Director of Donations at Community Forklift, who shared the social, economic, and environmental justice impacts of providing equitable access to reusable materials for households with limited resources and community organizations serving the greater good.

The big takeaway? Community Forklift is more than a thrift store for C&D materials; it provides low-cost building materials to the community and local businesses with limited resources, reduces the costs of collecting and transporting waste to the local landfills while saving landfill space, provides creative space for the local community, and creates green jobs which boost the local economy. A win-win for the community and the environment.

Arlington, VA Pilot Program Collects More Than 11,000 Pounds of Food Waste (Waste Advantage Magazine 9/26/24). In July 2024, Arlington VA launched a pilot program to collect food scraps and food-soiled paper from bins located outside select multifamily properties. As of September 24, more than 11,000 pounds of food waste has been collected in BigBelly Smartbins across parts of the City with a high concentration of multifamily buildings. The program has been a great success ... the focus of our next webinar!

Join us at noon on Thursday, November 21 for Arlington’s On-Street Food Scrap Collection Bins for Multifamily Residents as Erik Grabowsky, Chief of the Solid Waste Bureau, and Adam Riedel, Environmental Management Specialist, bring us up-to-date on the program. They'll share the program goals and lessons learned in this ambitious effort to expand the County’s ability to compost food scraps and prevent waste.
